"She has started grinding her teeth when ever I go to saddle her up"

Dear Keith...

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Hello, I have a three year old mare that is a Paint/QH. She has started grinding her teeth when ever I go to saddle her up. She hasn't been worked with a lot, maybe three days a week, but I have ridden her and she is coming along pretty well. The problem started just a few weeks ago when she started to try to bite me when I went to cinch up the girth. Well we worked out that she isn't going to bite me but now she will look back at me and grind her teeth! I do manage to get the saddle tight enough to get on and then after riding a bit I can tighten it up some more and she does pretty well. I don't use a bit as she was really chewing on it so we use a hackamore and she is very responsive with this. Seems the only real problem is tightening up the saddle. I have changed the girth, thinking maybe it was hurting her but no change. I was thinking of trying a different saddle pad too. Could it be that my saddle is hurting her? I'm not sure what else to do, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I get the perfect horse magazine and have purchased some of the download books and others but haven't seen this problem addressed. Thank you, Lori S.
