Dear Keith...
Wednesday, January 3, 2007
Thank you! your articles are great. The problem I am having is with a 7 month old filly that I cant get harnessed. We just bought her and the previous owners never touched her. In the last three weeks we have been able to get her to let us touch and brush her but she wont have anything to do with the harness. Any suggestions or other articles I can read.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Well, as you can see, we haven’t done all that much on young horses – yet. Plus, the situation you’re describing (like a lot of emails I get) is one that I can’t answer all that simply (though I wish that I could). I can say that John’s Brining Up Baby book is one of my favorites. It’s a compilation of Horse and Rider articles he wrote some years ago. The dirty dog got me to buy every issue – they’re really good. Anyway, now they’re compiled into a terrific book. (found here: http://www.horsemanship101.com/Catalog/Bringing-Up-Baby.html) Also, Josh’s video is very good for round penning young horses. (found here: http://www.horsemanship101.com/Catalog/Foal-Handling.html) You can screw up a young horse’s lungs (for life) rather easily, so be careful in your round penning if you move forward without a trainer or at least a good tape by your side.
Beyond that, have you tried the listing of topics we have? There’s about 215 topics listed, each leading to the proper book, video or article (when available). “Training by Topic” is here: http://www.horsemanship101.com/Horse-Training-Tools/index1001.html.
In essence, you treat a baby horse the same as an adult – except you dial everything way back, less intense (as mentioned above re the lungs).
Let me know how it goes – and make sure you get to one of our upcoming clinics if we’re coming to your area.

Keith,
Thank you so much for the information. I believe I will be purchasing several of your books, DVDs and audio tapes. When we bought the filly we bought her with her mom...and mom is pregnant. So we will have another little one in May.
I would love to go to a clinic...if you are ever coming to Oklahoma, please let me know.
Thank you again for all your help.

If your horse went ballistic out on the trail last week... it didn't "just happen out of the blue." He's been telling you for weeks or months that he was going to lose it when enough pressure was applied every time he resisted (however slightly)...
