"He has stopped on the middle of a very steep hill and been scared to continue on"

Dear Keith...

My question is: I have a fairly new horse that never wore a breast strap before. He also was not use to any hills where he lived before me. I go on a lot of trail rides. He has had 2 instances in 2 summers where he has stopped on the middle of a very steep hill and been scared to continue on, this does not happen all the time just occasionally. I have urged him to go but he will get scared that he won't make it and turn to try to go back, I do not feel at any time that this horse is trying to be obstinate, he trys to give me everything he's got. I've been concerned that he may try to rear up, he's never reared before but during this time he feels like he just might do that and I don't want us to go over backward down the hill so I get off and lead him up. He comes right with me and doesn't give me any trouble, stays right beside me. He is the bottom of the pecking order at home and both times this has happened a strange horse has been behind him and I don't know if that is a concern of his or what. I also ride him with a breast strap (western). A guy behind me said that it may be because he doesn't like the breast strap and gets confused with it pulling on him. I did try it the other day on steep hill without and he did much better. Someone said that an English breast strap would be better. I don't like going without a breast strap cause if we go up quite a few hills my saddle may get farther and farther back on him. Do you have any suggestions? |
