"Do you break 2 year olds or know of someone who is good with this using the Lyons techniques?"

Dear Keith...

Sunday, April 22, 2007

Keith, I really enjoy your horsemanship 101 emails. I have a 2 year old who is ready to break to saddle. Do you break 2 year olds or know of someone who is good with this using the Lyons techniques? I have a round pen at home so I can do all the ground work that is necessary before saddle training. I have used John Lyons methods and have all of his tapes. I am just getting too old and am afraid of falling and breaking something. Thank you. Karen O

Thanks for the kind words about the email; we do work hard on it. In fact, I took a break from the next one to answer this. For the same reasons you list, I don’t break horses. I will start them in the round pen, do the bridle work from the ground and then pass them off to another. I will also “finish” them. It’s that part in the middle you’ll need to find somebody who, well, bounces better. I’m afraid I don’t know of anyone I’d recommend in this area. If you need help with the other “parts,” let me know. Good luck – and let me know who you find (and how they do) Keith
