"I tried to get on and as soon as I get to her side she starts backing up, turning away from me"

Dear Keith...

Saturday, September 22, 2007

We have taken over an 8 year old mare who was offered to us by a family who could no longer afford to care for the horse. She had not been ridden or handles in many years, we got her about 4 months ago and you could not approach her. She was very nervous and very "spooky". We have been spending lots of time with her and now she comes to us when we call her, we can wash her and rub her down, she is still very cautious. I have been able to saddle her and put on a bitless bridle (Dr. Cooks). I have rode her 3 times over 3 weeks for about 20 minutes each. Just a slow walk in our pasture. She did stand still while i mounted her. this last week I tried to get on and as soon as I get to her side she starts backing up, turning away from me. I have not pushed her very hard to try to get on and can find no reason such as injury or sores to explain this behaviour. Any suggestion you can offer I would really appreciate. Thank you, Bob P
