"She ran away when another pasture horse decided to bolt"

Dear Keith...
Saturday, September 9, 2006
My horse suddenly started to runaway after I saddle her up. She is a 4 yr old Fresian/Clydedale mare, on 1 qt feed twice/day. She started this one month ago and raced around the pasture and trails. She ended up injuring herself (laminitis) and has been stall restricted for 4 wks. I took her out to graze today, with a shank, and she ran away when another pasture horse decided to bolt. How can I control this? She never did this before.
I had a John Lyons trainer work with her for 1 yr prior to all this.

It's your job to be consistent simply because horses become mirror images of their owners. Let's say you buy a horse and the horse pulls on the bit like he's trying to rip your arms out of their sockets. Well, you can blame the previous owner for...

When you think different, you are different. The more you raise your expectations, the better your horse will become. Those two thoughts bring us to a concept called "Thought vs Action." Riding an "action" is how ninety-nine percent of the people...

Suggested Article: "Good Now Bad Later"
Every time you teach an exercise, your horse will go through the same learning cycle. He'll go from "Bad" to "Good" to "Worse" to "Not So Bad" to "Learned." That's the typical cycle: Bad. Good. Worse. Not so bad. Learned.
You know...

Suggested Article: "Give Your Horse A Want-To Attitude"
I treat the horse the same way. If I ask him to standstill, that's cleaning his room. I say "Clean your room." He says "No." I say "Fine." Now, what can I do that requires movement? It doesn't matter if I'm in the arena or the trail. In...
