Dear Keith...

I am about to build a round pen and want to know what size is best and why. I have heard 50' and 60'. What do you recommend? Thanks.

You’re in the ballpark. My roundpen is somewhere in that neighborhood, but to tell you the truth, I’ve forgotten exactly. The bottom line, though is that no matter what I tell you I use, you may prefer a different size. Everybody’s a little different. I would suggest that you go find somebody using one on a frequent basis and ask them questions. Also, stand in the middle of both size areas you list and pretend a horse it out there. It’s doubly difficult for me to suggest because a lot also depends on the size of the horse and how much you like to run. What’s right for a warmblood may not work for another fellas’ arabs.
Regards,
Keith
