"I just read the article in your September newsletter about stopping biting. I have 2 questions"

Dear Keith...

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Hi Keith! I just read the article in your September newsletter about stopping biting (by the horse), and that "over-petting" him can also stop other rude behavior, such as moving while mounting. I have 2 questions: If you use it when your horse moves when you're trying to mount (as mine sometimes does), do you right away stop trying to mount, pet the heck out of his nose, then try to mount again? If you use this method to stop the bad behaviors, what happens when you really just want to pet him? Wouldn't he move away every time you try? How does he know the difference? I love my horse so much that I'm always petting or hugging him (or shouldn't I be doing that so much?). I also want to tell you how much I enjoy your newsletters every month. I'm still hoping you make it to the Western New York area with a clinic - you can bet I'll be there! Sandy H

Thanks for the note, Sandy - 1) The petting thing isn't for when you mount. The overall idea of the article is that you use (whatever necessary means) to fix one problem, the others are greatly improved. (So, you don't use the same technique for all - you fix one and effect another.) If your horse moves when you mount, then move him around for 15 minutes, moving his shoulder, moving his hips, etc. until he decides that standing still is a great idea. It's waaaaaay beyond the scope of an email to explain specifically - but books do exist on the subject, if you'd care to go that route - just look at this page: http://www.horsemanship101.com/Horse-Training-Tools/Standing-While-Mounting. html. 2) I've never seen an instance of "loving on a horse so much that you can't get near it anymore" - no such thing, far as I've seen. It's when they take you for a sap that you get into trouble. When you go nutso with the petting, you've got to really annoy the horse with it - like the bratty older sister. It's definitely not "nice horse" and a pet and you're done. That latter situation is what causes the problem in the first place. Keith
