If your horse went ballistic out on the trail last week... it didn't "just happen out of the blue." He's been telling you for weeks or months that he was going to lose it when enough pressure was applied every time he resisted (however slightly) the pull from your lead rope or reins.

If he walks ahead of you while you lead him, he's telling you that sooner or later he'll blow past you as you go through a gate or knock you on your kiester with his shoulder when something scares him bad enough.

If the muscles in his neck bulge toward you instead of relaxing when you put the bit in his mouth, he's telling you that he'll do mach sixty when he gets spooked on the trail.

Deal with these situations by doing two things: First establish a zero-tolerance policy; nip bad behavior in the bud the instant it happens. Example: If your horse inches past you as you lead, do an about-face and back that horse up. Keep him moving till he quits pushing back. (If he freezes pull on his head to pull his butt away from you. Getting those feet "unstuck" will allow you to keep backing till he lightens up.) Be adamant.

Second, get proactive. The first thing I do with any horse – and what I do each and everyday with all five of my own horses – is to see exactly where they stand when it comes to "resistance." Luckily the test and remedy are fun.

And having fun with this is a key point. Realize that every horse has resistance tucked away somewhere. Like an Easter egg, your job is to discover it. Instead of chocolate, your reward is a safer, more pleasant ride. The calmest, coolest, bestest trained horse you have ever seen has a little pocket of resistance hidden somewhere.

Caring for and riding a horse can bring countless hours of enjoyment and pleasure. The flighty nature of horses makes them useful to us because we can channel that flight instinct down the racetrack, over fences, around barrels, after a steer, across streams, or into the collar of a harness. However, this flight instinct may also cause injuries to humans and to the horse itself. Through his more than 30 years in equine veterinary practice and a lifetime as a horseman, Dr. Miller has learned many techniques for safely handling, treating, training and riding horses - methods that could save horse or owner from serious injury or even death! These safety techniques are taught in "Safer Horsemanship". You'll learn how to safely catch, halter and lead a horse, the three points of contact that will prevent you from being stepped on or kicked while working on the ground with your horse, how to examine a horse's teeth and ears, and administer eye medication. The safe methods of paste worming, taking a temperature and sheath cleaning are detailed as well as ways to prevent tying and halter accidents. Riding safety is also addressed in "Safer Horsemanship," as Dr. Miller shows you how he tacks up, mounts and dismounts, and trains his horses to be supple and always willing to stop. The lesson concludes with the proper sequence of untacking and turning your horse loose in its stall or corral. "Safer Horsemanship" should be studied by everyone who is involved with horses! Dr. Robert M. Miller is known to many through the pages of Western Horseman Magazine. He also serves on the editorial staff of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Forum. He is the author of "Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal," "Health Problems of the Horse," "Most of my Patients are Animals" and other books. His video titles include "Early Learning (The Complete Training of the Newborn Foal)," and "Understanding Horses." Dr. Miller founded the Conejo Valley Clinic over forty years ago in Thousand Oaks, California, where his patients included many species of zoo animals, as well as equines. Now retired, Dr. Miller devotes his time to writing, giving lectures and seminars worldwide and enjoying his own horses (and half horses - mules!).
