Re: horse training aids
As soon as he does something I don't want him to do, I'm going to replace that action with what I want. I don't discipline for what he did as much as, in my mind, think about replacing it with something I do want. If I don't want him to stand here and paw, then I'm going to ask him to move. If he wants to fight with his head, then I'm going to wait for him to soften up. If he wants to paw, as soon as I feel him even think about laying down, I'm going to
This simple timer keeps you from "over-riding" your horse and losing the good work you've put in. It clips to your clothes or saddle and keeps track of how long you've been training.

• avoid the painful and serious condition known as "tying up"
• avoid frustration (yours and your horse's)
• get your horse into shape safely and keep his attention
If you're like me, you concentrate on training your horse - and forget how long you've been riding. I could set my chronograph watch - but it takes a rocket scientist to run the thing... I found a simple answer: I found this timer.
Are you getting frustrated?
• Is your horse getting frustrated?
• Could you be pushing too hard for too long?
Now I can't ride without this thing!
It keeps an eye on me - and has so many uses:
• Do any exercise intensely for "20 minutes"
• Give your horse a "10 minute coffee break"
• Build up your horse's endurance safely by adding a minute or two or five each day
• Train your horse to get in a trailer by putting it in for one minute then letting it stand outside for two
We "time" just about everything we do with a horse - so why not clip this to your saddle and have it ready? If you carry a pocket knife, when was the last time you used it? You'll use this timer constantly.
It's a simple gadget. Just clip it to your clothes or saddle and forget about it.
• the large numbers are easy to read
• it's only got 3 buttons so you know it's easy to use!
• it "remembers" the amount of time you set it for and resets itself the next time
Here's a John Lyons methods training tip:
For quickest training results ride 4 to 5 times per week. When you ride, ride intensely for twenty minutes, then break for twenty and ride again for twenty. Remember to concentrate, move your hands slowly, and give your horse a 3-second break in between exercises. (Follow the links below to related articles.)
